Belgium Coffin makers, Belgium, Feb 2016

Recommended Posts

This one I can't seem to find any history on again... Maybe if I learnt to speak all the languages they speak in Belgium, it would be easier..? :L But anyway, this appeared to be a general furniture factory, with catalogues strewn about the place, along with lots of chairs, but of course, the most interesting room, and the one we were there for was the huge warehouse littered with woven coffins. We weren't in here long, due to there not really being all that much to see, but it was a real interesting stop all the same :D

I like this, I really like the fact that in the coffins it is quite obvious on the eye that a similar item to a duvet is used on the bottom of the coffin. I guess this is so that they are dead comfortable. ;) Nice little touch that even the dead are looked after :)

Some of you who speak to me on Fb or chatbox may have sussed i recently got a passport and also have been learning to abseil...This is the reason ive been doing the abseiling, saw this first several years or more ago and thought ive got no chance of ever seeing this! How times change..So all passported and roped up Myself SpaceInvader,Urbanginger and Obscurity set out to have a crack at this..
The shaft pics i would have liked to have done better but due to heavy rain on the way in and back out i wasnt risking the camera for a better shot!Big thanks to Si for the helping hand at the top dragging my knackered body over the final push!!
On with some pics,i seem to have got some lense flair going on so a return is in order.

At first glance, the huge psychiatry campus with its historical buildings reminds you of certain pieces of literature or films. The early morning haze lies over the hospital grounds and really adds to that somewhat uncanny atmosphere. It´s still pretty early in the morning. Thus, we almost don´t meet any people. A situation, that changed completely on our way back, when we had to keep as insconspicious as possible among patients, nursing stuff and "normal" visitors. Yet, everything´s still pretty calm and we can enjoy the morning silence as we walk across the park-like grounds of the hospital, walking on paths which are bordered by beautiful flowers. Here and there, beautiful buildings appear. Everything occurs to be peaceful and neat. Almost a place for your well-being, at least form the perspective of a non-patient. Not before we pass by a building, fenced up by thick bars, reality sets in. As if by command, we can suddenly hear screams coming out of the building.

The hospital is largely still active. Only a small part has been disused out of unknown reasons. It seems like time´s been standing still here for a pretty long time. Old benches would´ve been disappeared in a jungle-like thicket entirely, if it wasn´t for their bright red colours. Across an architectural more than beautiful patio we enter the building in front of us. Inside, particularly striking are the numerous toys scattred around the building. What exact purpose the old building served remains a mystery.
