Sol Viva nightclub, Bury, Lancs

Recommended Posts

The iconic 'Sol Viva' in Bury is set for demolition :/ I had many a fun night in there as a 14 year old, treading the sticky carpets and throwing up after too many shots.

Since it closed I've wanted to get in there; looks like I'll be too late as I won't be in my home town for a while. Looks like plans start on bank holiday Monday, but it's expected to take 17 weeks, so there maybe a short time to get them pics! I'd love to see old Sol before it's gone. If you're round that way, ave a look!!!! :)

Ahh fair enough. That's a shame. Cheers for checking!

I don't see anything about it being listed unfortunately. Shame. It's one of the last remaining nice original buildings in that dump. But knocking it down is fair game; they need more empty shops in Bury...

a recent visit with @woopashoopaa @Telf and @GRONK was a fun day out had by all of us.visited various locations so on to the police station after have a good look around and telf working out our way on site we spotted our entry point finally got in all was good headed streight upstairs was going well till we reached the ground floor and got busted. so not many pictures as i was more busy looking around and to be honest not really much to see a bit of history and pics....
The building has been empty since 2010, when the police force left Irwell Street for a new £16 million base in Castlecroft Street.
A Greater Manchester Police spokesman said: “We recommend that the public do not enter condemned buildings and adhere to safety signs that are on these buildings.
“We will arrest and detain anyone who is caught breaking and entering.â€

Ok let me tell you a crazy tale.
It began with a nice invite from bolts to come check out this school his mate had found.
Bloody good stuff and off i went.
Met up with bolts and headed out to the school. Once we got there checked out the pic on whats app of how to get in. After some scouring it was found and in me and bolts went p.s this was just to get into the playground.  With awesome people shot chances and cough p3 lol

      Said playground

Now has bolts has posted his report elsewhere turns out my pic pops up searching name of school. Only just saw this after trying to find history. So hopefully this will also work lol..

Now has you see quite bland.
But has the tale goes on ....
In this time bolts had accidentally triggered a pr. And a little beeping sound started up. Then stitch says dont worry no one came the last time. At what point i thought well who turned it off lol.
Anyway with risk of secca and the place bland it wasent looking great Until. A voice came from another room saying we got power.

      Said room

Then stuff turned up odd for a school..

Ok bit more intresting ... Then more stuff . This place was bigger than at first thought. And i aint going to lie the alarm thing was worrying and later you will hear what happens.

Then from out of nowhere i here OMG a pool.

And yep there it was a pool and hospital stuff and POWER.
A school with built in hosi. hell yea Now i apologize some of the next shots are not great .. This is due to hiding and running but that can wait pics first.

Now let me explain how this next part went.

Bolts spotted a secca guy standing outside. Cutting the explore short. While watching said secca another turned up . While heading for way out saw all the beds etc and just fast shot what i could .. The place looked great and wish i had more time but unfortunate that secca had other ideas. Now has we headed for a nice fire door we got out and stealthed our way to get off the site .. That did not last long has when we got to said exit a little look back and fook me 4 or 5 secca stareing back from inside school. And WTF they started taking pics . We got out of the playground. BUT it was not over yet has we went round a corner fook me Two vans and Two cars. Secca army now this is where bolts gets his name. We all fled and got split up . I thought i was long gone only to be ambushed by 5 secca wanting to know crap. So made some shit up about bird watching. They yapped for a bit saying shit like breaking in. Then over radio heard some shit about someone running from school i presume bolts lol. So they let me on way . Fooking crazy crazy crap. Was the most fun and crazy explore i have done yet. propper heart racing crap. Please people stay away its alarmed and secca are well not the niceist and in force. But whens that ever stopped anyone lol.....

The Palace Theater on Union Street, Plymouth was built for the Livermore Brothers in 1898 by the architects Wimperis and Arber as a Music Hall and Variety Theater, and formed part of a development which also included an Hotel called the Grand Western Hotel.

The Theater opened as the New Palace Theater on Monday September the 5th 1898 with a variety show. The auditorium consisted of stalls and pit, grand circle, gallery, and eight stage boxes, four on each side of the proscenium, and was built on the cantilever principle with a capacity of some 2,500 people. Sadly the original lavish auditorium and stage house were completely destroyed only three months after the Theater opened by a serious fire on the 23rd of December 1898. The fire started at night on stage but as the safety curtain had not been lowered for the night the fire spread quickly to the auditorium.

The ERA reported it in their 24th of December 1898 edition saying: 'The new Palace Theater of Varieties at Plymouth was seriously damaged by fire on Friday morning. The flames broke out shortly before midnight, and within an hour and a half, owing to a strong south-east wind, the whole of the stage, scenery, and dressing-rooms from the ground to the roof were demolished.

The first signs of fire were discovered between half-past twelve and a quarter to one o'clock. The usual performance had taken place in the evening, and a large audience had been present to witness the programme, which included, among other turns, a naval spectacular scene representing the Battle of Trafalgar. When the house was closed, at the end of the performance, everything seemed safe as usual. Firemen were on duty in the house while the performance was in progress, but no one bad been left in charge. The fire was, therefore, first seen from the outside.

glare was perceived by a policeman near the stage entrance.

Every effort was directed to prevent the spread of the flames to the auditorium, but unfortunately it was utterly impossible to gain access to the fireproof curtain. From the first the fierceness of the flames cut off access to the stage. If this curtain could have been lowered the area of the fire might have been at once restricted. The effect of the fire was to utterly destroy everything connected with the stage, and to do an immense amount of damage to the auditorium. All the beautiful scheme of decoration, upon which a large amount of money was expended, has been irretrievably ruined. Happily the facade and the grand staircase, which are among the most striking portions of a very fine building, escaped destruction. In the rest of the house the damage was very great. The fire is believed to have been caused by some combustibles used in the Battle of Trafalgar scene.

The Theater reopened on Monday the 22nd of May 1899 and it is remarkable how quickly the building was restored and refurbished The building was converted for Bingo in 1961 and then had a varied life of occasional Theatre use and Bingo for many years until it was once more refurbished in 1978 and reopened as a live Theater again. In 1982 the new Theater Royal opened in Plymouth and this was a major blow for the old Palace, sadly the building's short revival to live Theatre was to end the following year and in 1983 the Theatre closed and was converted for nightclub use as the Academy

The academy was one of the biggest clubs in Plymouth until 08/05/06 after a raid at 1.15am which saw up to 140 officers in riot gear storm the main entrance after undercover police suspected that drugs were being sold on the premises the club was then shut down the same night and has been unable to operate since in which it now stands empty and falling apart.

Recently been bought by a charity who are in the process of doing the building up.

The Grand in Banbury opened in 1911 as a live theatre and in 1929 began screening films. It was the first cinema in Oxfordhsire to show a film with sound, and started with “Showboat”. The theatre closed in 1935 for reconstruction and modernisation.

The Grand reopened in December 1935 , redesigned in an Egyptian/Deco style by Joseph G. Gomersall of Drury & Gomersall architects. It was taken over by Associated British Cinemas(ABC) in August 1943, but was never renamed. The theatre closed in 1968, and was later used for bingo for 30 years. In 2006 the Grand was converted into a Chicago Rock Cafe which later became Wonderlounge.

Despite the many uses, much of the internal decor remains intact including the original proscenium and stage, auditorium plasterwork and the circle – although the circle seats have been removed and is now filled with junk. Amazingly, the projector room still contains the remains of a projector setup – a Peerless lamphouse upon an original stand.

Abandoned a couple of years ago, part of a larger complex of buildings D9 Nightclub in Leicester still has working lights and heating. This wasn't a usual Saturday night out for Spider Monkey and I, and was lots of fun! There was even a bit of stock left in the cellar, and beer connected to the bar pumps - but after a couple of years would only be enjoyed by those who are partial to a pint or two of vinegar!
