USA Portside Grain Elevator aka 'The Motherload' - March 2015

Recommended Posts

...or to give it it's proper title, the 'Holy f**king s**t this is epic' Grain Elevator.

After finding the most unassuming but amazing breakfast spot ever where I ate possibly the best toasted bacon and egg breakfast sandwich I have ever eaten I knew that it was going to be a good day.

This place is massive. And I mean truly MAHOOOOSIVE. The elevators at Silo City in Buffalo are the only things comparable in size to this behemoth which towers over everything in the neighbourhood. The ascent to the top floors where all the interest lies involves a dizzying, disorientating spiral staircase in a pitch black metal tube that takes you to the level above the vast silos, and then numerous staircases up to the roof - tiring stuff but the rewards are totally worth it. I soon forgot about my aching legs as once again I found myself somewhere in which I literally didn't know where to point the camera at first, everywhere I looked I saw something I needed to investigate.

So here are some photos of what I saw.

Cheers peeps :)

Favourite thing I've seen from your recent trip this, full of win...any shots of the spiral staircase?

It wasn't that great from the outside, it went up about a floor then disappeared into the metal tube so not much to look at from top or bottom sadly...it was bloody tiring though!

A little late to the party, I know... but have to say, Thanks For Posting! Motherlode indeed. I have been pondering the exploration of a couple of these locations in my backyard here in Indiana and find this collection a most powerful whetting agent!

Nothing wrong with bringing old reports back up to the surface, especially when they are like this!

@mookster you have a habit of producing epically mahoosive places, pretty synonymous with ‘murica I guess... 😉

nice one.

Hey Everyone! Welcome to my very first Urbex..! My group and I went to these houses south of Atlanta that have been abandoned for a few years now. Unfortunately, they are going to be torn down soon, so anyone who may want to visit them, DM me ASAP! Anyway, The first house we went to was just empty and peaceful. The second house, not so much... We found graffiti telling us to leave; we should have listened. We stepped into the garage of the house and saw blood on the floor, and drag marks leading to the attic. Not wanting to see a dead body, we left. We're planning on going back to the attic soon in daylight. The third house was almost worse. We found some evidence that a serious crime may have happened there, as well as a swastika and a Confederate flag. We left without exploring too much of that house. On our way out, one of my friends looked back at the top floor of the house and saw someone in the window. We left quickly. I hope you guys like the pictures, some of them may be NSFW, the swastika. Otherwise, have a great day everyone! Be safe!

First Post Guys! Anyways, my group of friends and I found an abandoned Gas Station south of Atlanta. Apparently, the gas station went bankrupt due to the county screwing them over. A new highway system was out in, and the road to the gas station was relocated, so in order to get to the station, one would have to travel a good 5 minutes out of their way. Not worth it. So the station closed down and now it looks like this. May go back to take more pictures soon, stay posted. Have a great day guys, and be safe!

It's been months sense I got out and explored an abandoned location.  There wasn't much left here, but it still felt great to be back on that horse again.

Visited with banned batz and andy. First time out for awhile included a trip here.
This was owned by Samuel Firth of Gatehead, Marsden, and opened in 1888. He also owned Holme Mill.By the 60s, it was owned and run by Fisher, Firth & Co. which became Cellars Clough Woollen Mills Ltd, managed by another Firth son, in 1981. The company has now been dissolved. At its height it employed 180 people but the mill shut down in 1982.
There are currently plans to try and convert it in to apartments.
