An airship port was set up at the Jüterbog shooting range near the old camp during the First World War. For this purpose, two airship hangars (“Albrecht” and “Baer”) were built in 1916, including the necessary infrastructure such as barracks and a hydrogen production plant. After the First World War, according to the provisions of the Versailles Treaty, use had to be abandoned. A hall collapsed as a result of improper demolition work, resulting in fatalities. The other was then dismantled by a specialist company. She came to Japan as spoils of war and was rebuilt in Kasumigaura.

After the Nazis took power in 1933, an air base was set up at this point under the code name "Forest Camp" during the rearmament of the Wehrmacht. The location of the air force, which was initially secret, included the airfield, the medical teaching and testing department of the air force and the aeronautical school of the 1st Air Fleet.

When the aeronautical school was moved to Warsaw in 1940, the higher aeronautical school, which had meanwhile been founded in Berlin, moved to the forest camp. Aircraft maintenance ceased in 1943. The following aircraft types were stationed here: Messerschmitt Bf 109G, Junkers Ju 88D-1, Messerschmitt Me 410A-3, Junkers Ju 188F-1, Focke-Wulf Fw 190A, Messerschmitt Bf 109G, Junkers Ju 88S/A
By the end of the war, the site had reached the size of a small town.
On April 20, 1945, in the course of the Battle of Berlin, the Red Army occupied the site after the staff of the Higher Technical School had withdrawn as the last German troop unit, but without destroying the building prepared for demolition.

The Soviet Air Force then used the site as a front-line airfield for almost three weeks. After the end of the war, various Soviet units were stationed in Jüterbog, such as the 196th Guards Transport Regiment (1946-1947), the headquarters of the 4th Guards Fighter and 114th Guards Fighter Divisions (1947-1949 and 1949-51), the 779th and 985th Bomb Regiment (1951) and the 886th Independent Reconnaissance Regiment (1952-1953).
From 1953 to 1994, the airfield was operated as the location of the Soviet 833rd Fighter Regiment (833rd IAP) of the 16th Air Army as part of the Soviet troops and was continuously expanded. MiG-21 combat aircraft were stationed here from 1966 to the mid-1980s. From 1984 these were supplemented by MiG-23s. From 1966 various helicopter and attack helicopter units also used the space.

I also think it looks beautiful with the snow outside. And the mural looks better without the moustache ;)
