Oculus Tower - Italy 2019
Another adventure from the Euro 19 Derp Tour. We'd had this one on the map for a while and this year we decided to go and check it out. Not knowing if it was even still standing, we were pretty pleased to find it was
. Mel and I went in search of entry whilst Adam and Bigjobs mooched about at the car. Luck was on our side and we found a way over the canal and into the site so went back to grab the others and headed in to explore.
Now we had heard rumours of security and people being attacked whilst waiting for friends to take photos so we took a slightly longer route to the buildings keeping our eyes and ears peeled. However, it turned out unnecessary and it soon became clear that we were the only ones there.
In the main its just one big tower with a few derpy buildings nearby. But is a pretty cool and funky tower and it was definitely worth a visit.
History
The abandoned factory of Eridania was a large industrial distillery is located in the city of Ferrara in Italy. This place was once famous for producing the best Italian alcohol. This huge factory used to process sugarbeets into oils, sugars and alcohols and had customers across a range of industries like Martini for the alcohol, Manutti for industrial oils and alcohol for the pharmaceutical industry.
In 1935 Distillerie Italiane received permission from the national government to set up a chemical plant near its distillery in Pontelagoskuro, a suburb of Ferrara on the banks of the River Po.
By 1936, a special industrial zone had been created in the west of Ferrara. Equipped with roads, railways, canals, and shipyards, the area was soon occupied by new industries, mainly chemical and agrochemical. In 1940, construction began on a distillery called Distillerie Italiane.
In 1944, aerial bombardment partially destroyed the project, but it was eventually built. By 1953, the plant produced more than 30 percent of the total alcoholic produce of Italy, using ethanol fermentation to synthesize alcohol from sugar beet.
In addition to ethanol, the plant was able to produce dry ice, yeast, glycerin, and reclaimed sugar through the molasses desugarization process.
In 1967, the sugar company Eridani acquired Distillerie Italiane. Fully dependent on the national (and local) sugar industry, the distillery went on to experience a significant recession from the early 2000s onwards.
For several years, the plant passed from hand to hand until it eventually closed in 2005. This was due to a final financial blow in the form of an EU directive that established strict production quotas for Italian refineries.
After the directive was issued, Eridania began to suffer losses which ultimately led to the distillery’s closure. Since then, the site has been abandoned.
With no tripod or a wide-angle lens and poor lighting due to the sun starting to set the pics didn't come out as well as I liked but they are not as bad as some of the photoatos I took on this trip lol.
