In the months before my already 13th trip to Romania this summer, I searched intensively for abandoned places nearby my planned itinerary. Among other things, I came across this castle on the Web. It looked interesting and worthwhile, so of course I went there to check it.
After a quite bumpy ride on unpaved back roads, we reached the village on the fourth day of our trip. The gate on the front was closed, but at the back a already pretty overgrown trail led on the grounds. The doors and windows along the path were locked or barricaded. So we made our way through bushes and scrub and found access on the other side. Inside, we had to climb over the rubble of a partially collapsed narrow corridor of the side wing, to get into the entrance hall of the main house with gallery and fireplace.

This is how the castle looked during its heyday:
HISTORY
In the second half of the 19th century, the estate passed to a noble family, who formerly had migrated to Hungary. The family was one of the few exceptions that represented the Romanian aristocracy in former Hungary and - with famous scholars, high-ranking politicians and officers - it was one of the most respected noble families within the socio-political scene of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
After the addition of two wings, the heirs and descendants of the owner continued to expand the main building and they also built stables and another house for the servants. The last descendant of the family became Grand Master of the Royal Hunters. In 1908 he redesigned the interiors and created a spacious and picturesque park.
After the expropriation by the communist regime, the building complex subsequently served, among other things, as a hospital for neuropsychiatry and last as a tuberculosis sanatorium.
In the following years after its closure, the interior was partly removed, partly stolen. The building got more and more into oblivion and was eventually abandoned to decay due to lack of use. Sadly, the castle is in a very bad condition today and several parts of the building have already collapsed.
