The House of Statistics, (German: Haus der Statistik) was built on Alexandraplatz, Berlin between 1968 and 1970. It was the seat of the central administration for statistics in the former East Germany

On the upper floors a few departments of the Ministry for State Security had their office up there to have a good view over Alexanderplatz. After the reunification the Stasi Records Agency had their offices in the building for a few years.

But since 2008 the whole complex has remained empty. The Berlin Senate bought this and some other buildings. The plan was to tear everything down and build new buildings. But now it will be mixture of new buildings and renovating old ones.

I first had a mooch on a weekday, but like a lot of these long abandoned buildings, it was on the process of demolition/renovation. Too many little worker ants scurrying about to get in.

Saturday was a good day, not so many on site and I was able to spend sometime in and around the building.

From basement to the 7th floor, it had been stripped bare, it was good to find the odd item of nostalgia. Therein lies the problem with these big old behemoths, not enough intimacy for me.
