Nipped into this place on the way back from St George's. Really glad we did aswell, especially after seeing the recent report regarding it's demolition on another forum. Not a big place this one but I rather enjoyed it all the same. Some nice decay in here when we went with peeling paint, hanging wallpaper and plants growing in some areas. The central corridor was the highlight for me, some really nice woodwork on show here set off by cracking paint and decay. Big thanks to the Wildboys for putting this on the map for me and showing that it was doable. Shame it's gone so soon. Visited with non member Paul.

HISTORY

Homelands Hospital opened in 1903 and was originally a fever hospital, an early form of infectious disease hospital. This explains the somewhat isolated position of the complex.  It was believed at the time that the best way to treat diseases such as tuberculosis, typhus and smallpox was to move sufferers away from others to a more rural site where fresh air would be the best form of therapy.
The building have had some later additions and alterations, however, the style and quality of the buildings are typical of that used for municipal buildings of the era.
The majority of period features within the buildings have either been lost or covered by modern surface finishes, though some period features remain.
The hospital closed in December 2004. In August 2016 demolition began on Homelands to make way for new houses.

I like those doors with the portholes and the sink, that's nice mate. Decay is great too. Good work (y)

Cheers Raz  :)  Yep, the corridor was the highlight for me. Been wanting to see something like that for a while.
