While researching bunkers in Malta I came across an article about this cold war substation sitting underneath an old barracks which is currently undergoing redevelopment. The developers failed to mention it in their planning application so it was approved by the Planning Authority without any knowledge of the bunker's existence. When news of the bunker came to light, three local councils, several NGOs and residents came together to appeal the decision and requested an Emergency Conservation Order be put in place to prevent it from being demolished.
I can't find much history on the place except that the substation dates back to the 1950s and there is an engine room next door which dates back to the 1930s. Unfortunately the engine room was locked up but the substation was pretty much untouched with everything left inside. It was quite small but always nice when somewhere is so intact. Malta was still a British colony at the time so that explains why there is so much English Electric equipment inside. According to a plan I found elsewhere these substations are dotted around all over the island so there are more to be found. Visited with Sids, Scrappy, Urbex medic, and Extreme ironing, who were all too lazy to get their cameras out. Heathens!
Pretty sure this is the same regulation poster that can be found in the London deep level shelters.
Thanks for looking ❤️
