Elland-cum-Greetland Gas Company was established on 6th May 1836. Managers have included Robert Dempster who worked as an engineer and manager of company from 1850. He was one of the first members of the British Association of Gas Managers and an associate member of the Institute of Civil Engineers.
On 31st January 1922, Tom Turner and his wife were found unconscious in their bed by the police who had been alerted when Mr Turner failed to show up for work at John Horsfall & Sons Limited, both later died in the Royal Halifax Infirmary. It was suspected that the couple had left the gas on low, because Mr Turner was suffering from cold and bronchitis. During the night, the Elland Gas Company reduced gas pressure in the area, which would have been sufficient for a small light to go out
On visiting we could only assume numerous companies have been based here and that it was a home too as there were many children’s toys and drawings scattered about the place which gave off a slightly creepy vibe.
