The F-4 Objektum is a nuclear shelter located underneath downtown Budapest. Its construction began in 1952, at the same time as Line 2 of the metro, to which it has a connection. The bunker is situated 39 metres beneath the surface, and was suitable to accommodate 2,200 people. To maintain secrecy, construction workers were told they were building standard metro tunnels. Its primary goal was to provide shelter to Mátyás Rákosi (the de facto leader of Hungary from 1947 to 1956) and members of the Hungarian Working People's Party in the event of a nuclear attack. Once the danger had passed, they would escape via the metro to Eastern Railway Station, where they would transfer to an armoured train.
One from a little while ago. Visited with elliot5200, tallginge and otter. The construction reminded me of the deep level shelters in London - a circular tunnel divided into two decks, with an upper and lower level, although it's nowhere near as large as those in London. We found a log book that indicated it was being checked quite regularly at the time, and some of the machinery still appeared to be in working order.
This leads to the metro but also has a tunnel connecting to the bunker. It was locked when we checked it from inside.
Thanks for reading.
