The air base has a long and eventful history.
The beginnings go back to before the Second World War.
Initially used by various and changing units of the Reich Air Force, the Royal Air Force then came to use the site.
After a period of non-use, the Bundeswehr built an airfield according to the latest NATO standards.
Over the years, the Bundeswehr deployed Republic F-84F "Thunderstreak" here,
Lookhead F 104G "Starfighter" and McDonnell F-4 "Phantom".
In a highly secured QRA area, there were 2 machines ready to start around the clock, which were guarded by over 100 US soldiers and, in the event of a defense, would have been equipped with nuclear weapons.
Due to the changed situation after the fall of the Iron Curtain, the fate of the air base was sealed. The association was no longer provided for in Air Force Structure 5 and after almost 70 years the airfield was abandoned.
The site now belongs to the municipality, which has already carried out some construction work here and is planning more. A large part of the building is rented and used for other purposes.
