Ongar Radio Transmitting Station occupied a site of 730 acres at North Weald in West Essex adjacent

to the late 19th Century North Weald Redoubt, one of 13 London Mobilisation Centres.

It was originally built in 1920 and operated by Marconi's Wireless Telegraph Company.

In September 1929, control passed to Imperial and International Communications when the

telegraphic communications of the Empire were placed in the hands of a single operating company.

The name of the company was changed to Cable and Wireless in June 1934 and the company owned the

radio station until the passing of the Commonwealth Telegraphs Act, 1949,

whereby the United Kingdom radio services of the Post Office and Cable and Wireless Ltd.

became integrated on April 1st 1950. Ongar Radio was one of three pairs of transmitting stations,

each pair consisting of a transmitter and receiver station; Ongar being paired with Brentwood.

Nice to see the Allan Williams Turrets remain second from last image

Nearly 200 were made and installed, salvaging of the metal after the war means that only 33 remain.

This is a strange one, it's derped beyond belief but I've always kinda liked it. After getting kicked out of Essex by the local constabulary this was a peaceful fall-back for me and the gang a while ago. Very peaceful here, loads of people walk their dogs in and out of it, but certainly it was very soggy then and it looks like it still is, it would take a good few excellent summers to dry this one out. Always thought it would make a great movie set for something.
