Helical Works, West Bromwich
The second to last explore of a brilliant, but very tiring and eventful weekend. After a mostly
successful day in Leicester , A non member and myself said our goodbyes to our other two explorer
friends and made the journey to West Bromich to recce this location in daylight, before finding a
local establishment for food, refreshments, and to kill time until the planned early morning entry.
A few hours of extremely loud traditional Asian music, several refreshments, and some
horrendously spicy chips later, we left and headed to the cars for a few hours hypothermic kip. In
the wee hours I dragged myself up rather grumpily and had a red bull for breakfast. Access was
made and we covered the previously explored part then after a bit of waving at various PIRs and
camera dodging pushed further in to photograph some (at the time) un-covered areas and buildings, which was
a nice feeling.
History
In West Bromwich is the West Bromwich Spring Co. Ltd, also known as Helical Works. The West
Bromwich Spring has been at the forefront of precision manufacturing since 1896. Their website
boasted a claim Precision springs made to order: Any Design. Any Quantity. Any Time.
Found it difficult to find a lot of history on the place online for some reason, just loads of links to
yell.com etc giving details of the business as if it was still up and running, which makes sense I
suppose as the site is roughly 25% live with only the rear areas falling into dereliction. Found some
disjointed info about the owner legging it from the site and not returning after a large quantity of
his machinery failed safety checks in 2007 and it would've been too expensive to bring the
equipment up to satisfactory standards. The company was valued by an independent body around
this time at £-110,892. The unknown owner currently rents parts of the complex out to private businesses.

This prevented us from pushing any further into the site, not sure if it was working but didn't want
to find out in our sleep-deprived state.
