Harry Pounds breakers yard, Portsmouth.

Unfortunately, most of the good stuff, submarines etc, have gone. There's still a few treats remaining though.

1

LARC LX 50, US Navy amphibious landing craft, first used in 1967 in Vietnam.

These things are massive.

Without these Zinc anodes, the hull would rust in minutes. Most of them have been stolen now, probably for scrap zinc

Brilliant report fella, some great stuff there.

Did a quick Google on the name on the headstone, the lad died in a fork lift truck accident, don't know if the stone has been moved but there's a shot in the link of it in much nicer surroundings

That pic is the same place, just 8 years later. I think it used to be the greyhound racing tracks at Hilsea but that's been cleared. Weird that they left the grave behind

Bloody hell! Naval nerds correct me if I'm wrong but that looks like a QF Mk6 :) 4.5" This was the backbone of British medium range armament from the 1930's to the 1970's. From the type 41's right up the the Queen Liz and Renown class. I'd love to see one, spot on find mate!

Incidently if anyone were to ever plan a holiday to Sydney HMAS Vampire has some pristine examples :D

I visited this place years ago and even asked Mr Pound himself if I could take some photos (35mm) he said I could go anywhere as long as it wasn't the structure where the subs were tied up to, I was interested in the subs as they were the same class as I served on. At the time the scrap value was so low he said it would cost more in gas to cut them up than they were worth. Both were sold with one going to Germany, the other was on the way to the Med when it sank on route. I did take a few more photos but this is the only one I can find.
