The Guildhall Walk In Centre, located in the heart of Portsmouth, served as an essential healthcare resource for the local community. Providing accessible medical care for minor illnesses and injuries, it became an integral part of the city’s healthcare infrastructure.
In March 2021, the centre closed its doors, affecting approximately 8,400 patients. The closure was primarily due to funding cuts and the need for renovation of the facility, which was no longer deemed fit for purpose. Patients were informed through letters and were assisted in registering with alternative GP practices to ensure continuity of care.
Following the closure, the Portsmouth Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) collaborated with local GP practices to accommodate the displaced patients, aiming to minimize disruptions to their healthcare services. Efforts were made to ensure that the transition was as smooth as possible, with support provided to both patients and staff during the closure process.
As of 2025, Portsmouth is witnessing significant investments aimed at enhancing healthcare services. A potential £5 million investment has been proposed to bolster research initiatives focused on tackling health inequalities and improving health outcomes for residents. This investment is a collaborative effort involving Portsmouth City Council, HIVE Portsmouth, and the University of Portsmouth.
