It was another early start to the day for my biggest explore to date, accompanied by Upright _ Ninja (the coffee bringer) and Bamboo Backbone (the sandwich maker), we headed out all very excited about the day ahead. we managed to get there and get in without too much trouble, a little climbing involved, but it was all worth it when we got inside. I was amazed at the size of the place, and was looking forward to a good few hours exploring. We managed to get about half the way round, but also managed to double back on ourselves and we ended up getting busted 5 hours later, pretty much where we started. Clearly another trip is needed in the near future to see the rest of it, and maybe a trail of bread crumbs to make sure we don’t end up where we started again!
History
Originally known as The Second Essex County Asylum ( The S.E.C.A) opened in 1913 and was known soon after as Severalls Asylum, then Severalls Mental Hospital until finally being known as Severalls Hospital. It was built by W.King & Sons London, with a patient capacity of 1,800. The main complex was laid out on the ECHELON Floor plan, which meant that patients and staff could move between different areas of the hospital through connecting corridors without stepping outside.
The hospital was operational for almost 90 years and survived 2 world wars, only succumbing to the mental health act & care in the community, closing its doors forever in 1997.
A Few pic's, trying out my new Sigma 10-20mm lens
Needless to say we didn't find the nurse in charge.
